California Poppy Entry for The Passionate Pen Conference extended

At The Passionate Pen Conference we have a special themed collaborative exhibit entitled “The California Poppy.” We are EXTENDING the deadline to make allowance for those of you who still want to contribute.

We would like to invite all visual artists to submit an 8×8” inch cardstock square incorporating your work of art using the poppy theme. It could be lettering, drawing, photography, abstract, whatever medium you prefer. Let your imagination blossom! We will be exhibiting them during the conference, so please submit works of art for display by July 10, 2015 (address below).

Simple or fancy, please plan to take part!

Submission Guidelines:

  • Use cardstock, cardboard, or stiff paper product that can hold shape well for the week.
  • This exhibit will be displayed without gallery sitters or other security measures. While we do not expect problems, the work will not be insured against damage or loss. You may wish to consider submitting a high quality giclee print of your artwork rather than the original if you have any concerns.
  • Put your name, city and primary guild name (if you are a part of one) on the back.

Suzanne Moore and Suzie Beringer at the Scribe Store

Suzanne Moore Prints

Lettering artist, printmaker and painter Suzanne Moore will be selling her prints at the Scribe Store.

These are all limited edition pigmented, handmade prints. The prints have either original lettering, gold and palladium leaf and embossing or two of those techniques. They are part of a series of explorations of the letter A.

Suzie Beringer Calligraphic Beads

Suzie Beringer developed these ‘Calligraphic Beads‘ for a class she taught at Letters of Joy.  There will be many different styles at the scribe store.  She believes that everything looks better with letters on them…..

Amity Parks and Larry Thomas at the Scribe Store

Handmade and hand lettered ceramic pots made by Amity Parks

These ceramic pots are one of a kind, individually lettered by Amity. They are glazed with a clear gloss finish and can be used in the studio, kitchen or just as a decoration.

They are approximately 2-3 inches wide and each is made out of white earthenware clay, hand lettered and then fired in a kiln to create the finished surface.

Ingrid Slezak and Sally Penley at the Scribe Store

Ingrid Slezak and Sally Penley will be selling their artwork at the Scribe Store.

Ingrid Slezak’s blank handmade journals are sewn on cords and open flat for easy drawing and writing using a technique learned from Tim Ely. Some are made with good bond paper and others with Strathmore 400 drawing paper. After sewing the signatures, the edges are cut with a guillotine and the the covers are added. The cover papers are watercolor, paste papers and marbled papers that I have made over the years and are drummed onto book board. Sizes vary – from small to 8″ x 11″. The majority are 5″ x 9″.

Sally Penley’s “Background Blitz” instruction booklet is from Sally’s popular “Background Blitz” workshop. This booklet is packed with 10+ techniques for painting papers or creating backgrounds for calligraphy.  The booklet is small in size, but large in content—with step-by-step instructions and supply lists for each technique, tips and visual examples.  Also included in the booklet are some basic design and composition rules for creating finished work.

Call for Guild Banners

We’ll be displaying guild banners at The Passionate Pen calligraphy conference this summer, and we’re hoping for a colorful array this summer, so round up your guild’s banner and send it to our Conference Office at Sonoma State University. It must arrive no earlier than July 13th and no later than July 20th. Attached is a downloadable pdf shipping label addressed to the Conference Office at Sonoma State University.

This label must be attached somewhere on your package, even if you have an additional UPS or other shipping label.

Denis Brown DVD’s at the Scribe Store

The calligrapher, artist and teacher Denis Brown will be selling his DVD’s at the Scribe Store:

The Calligraphy DVD program “Italic Rhythm to Polyrhythmic Calligraphy: Expanding Writing Dynamics” has 9 hours of video tutorials and inspiring demonstrations in a multi disk set for PC and Mac computers. PARTICIPANTS’ EXHIBIT

Here’s your chance to strut your stuff! Please bring a piece of your artwork to display during the week.

This is a do-it-yourself exhibit. Here are the particulars:

  • Bring one piece, unframed (matted is okay)
  • Any medium, any subject (sorry, no books or 3-D works – must be hangable)
  • Maximum size: 9″ x 12″
  • Write your name on the back
  • Bring a business card or equivalent identifier
  • Hang it yourself on Saturday or Sunday
  • Remove it on Thursday after class

The Participants’ Exhibit at The Passionate Pen will be located in the Student Center near the weeklong stores. We will provide clips with which to hang your artwork. Instructions will be posted there.

Participant artwork will be displayed without gallery sitters or other security. While we do not expect any problems, the pieces will not be insured against damage or loss, so please keep this in mind when choosing a piece to bring. High quality copies are acceptable if you have any concerns.

Work that is left hanging on Friday will be collected and brought to the office. If you have not picked them up by Friday afternoon.. bye, bye!

Laura Drager Book at the Scribe Store

Laura Drager’s accordion book entitled “Benedictions” will be at the Scribe Store. It was a recent class project with the goal of creating an item for reproduction. It will be displayed on a tri-fold display board.
