This will be a no pressure day for all levels from complete beginners. Celtic manuscripts first inspired Denis Brown as a teenager in his native Dublin, Ireland, when he would bicycle to town to see a new page of the Book of Kells every day. From digital slide presentations Denis will explain themes of Celtic decoration and writing in some of the most important surviving manuscripts including the Book of Durrow, Lindisfarne Gospels, and the Book of Kells. Modern work in Celtic style will also be shown. Following the presentation, basic instruction on writing a Celtic hand and drawing a simple Celtic initial will be given. Denis will bring along some of his own early works along with more recent pieces.
